Back to the West
There is a feeling at large that the world, and America in particular, has lost its way. What we see portrayed in the news is consistently disheartening, perhaps not intentionally, but nevertheless. It is a natural side effect: the news is supposed to illuminate the issues of the day so that a solution might also come into view. Oftentimes those issues are no light matter.
America is, at its heart, a land of the frontier. While we think of the Wild West, this has been the American ideal since the founding of Our Nation. There is a born instinct in America for pushing the boundaries of human ingenuity, to set the course for the world in industry, in governance, and in every strand of the cultural fiber. This is a simple truth. The dilemma people will find themselves grappling with is whether American influence is a net positive, or a net negative.
While many will be ready to articulate the inherent vice of America’s moral founding, there is a great and timeless beauty in the structure that the Founders left us to work within. Any nation at any given point in history will have had much room for improvement. But when basic freedoms of expression are your founding principle, that improvement for once becomes possible.
And that is the American Spirit.
While we have never been perfect, particularly in government, we have achieved great things for humanity in our attempts at cultural expression. We have pioneered in arts, technology, human rights, commerce, and everything in between. Many people disdain this.
The Western Post is aimed at illustrating the American spirit in the light that it deserves. Rather than disparaging the enemy or propping up the exploits of those in power, we want to show that America is not a history or a government, but a wish. It is a machine for change, and a very effective one. But it can only be a machine for good if we are smart about it.
This is a land of opportunity. Despite that there is no shortage of problems we have, and even that we inadvertently create, America is still always the place for those who want to solve them. The frontier is always evolving, but we are always evolving with it. We are the great craftsmen of the world because it runs through our blood.
Our newspaper strives to carry this opportunism to the public, so that people view the news as something hopeful rather than something desperate. We view things as nuanced, and we view them as sequential. Nothing happens in isolation, and for this reason it can be useful to ask questions.
While based in the Philadelphia area, we report on national and international events to bring the Western ideal to the forefront of the conversation.
